A NOTE FROM THE KITCHEN
Coffee liqueur supplies the sweetness.
Contains alcohol and dairy. This uses Kahlúa’s equal-parts balance of vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream. It is a small alcoholic cocktail, with no extra sugar, whipped topping, or coffee-bean garnish.

BEHIND THE DISH · International coffee-cocktail traditions
White Russian · coffee & creamBeyond the plate.
Coffee liqueur and cream turn a short vodka drink into a softly marbled cocktail.
ORIGINS & EVOLUTION
Cream changes a familiar combination.
The White Russian adds cream to the vodka-and-coffee-liqueur pairing of the Black Russian. Its name reflects an association with vodka; it should not be treated as proof that the cocktail originated in Russia.
CULTURAL CONTEXT
Texture is part of its identity.
Cream softens the coffee flavor and creates pale trails as it moves through the darker liquid. The effect changes with a stir, so the drink need not arrive with perfectly separated layers.
AT THE TABLE
Three equal measures over ice.
Our version uses Kahlúa’s equal-parts approach. We stir the vodka and coffee liqueur briefly over ice, then pour in cold heavy cream. There is no added syrup or elaborate garnish.
