A NOTE FROM THE KITCHEN
A small dice keeps everything spoonable.
Cut the potato into roughly ½-inch cubes so it cooks alongside the beef. Raisins are a household preference, so they are optional here. This recipe includes the picadillo only; make rice separately if you would like it alongside.

Ground beef, vegetables, olives, and a little sweetness make a skillet full of small contrasts.
ORIGINS & EVOLUTION
One member of a wider family.
Picadillo appears in several Latin American cuisines. Cuban versions commonly combine ground meat with a tomato-based sofrito, green olives, and sometimes potatoes and raisins.
CULTURAL CONTEXT
Household choices matter.
The raisins are a particularly personal detail: some cooks value their sweetness and others leave them out. That variation is part of home cooking rather than a reason to declare one family’s plate incorrect.
AT THE TABLE
A spoonable supper.
Our version cooks small potato cubes in the sauce and keeps the raisins optional. Cutting everything fairly small gives each spoonful a mixture of beef, sauce, and vegetables. Rice is a convenient companion, prepared separately.
