A NOTE FROM THE KITCHEN
Warm gently and keep the wine below a boil.
Grzaniec can refer to mulled wine or mulled beer; this recipe makes the red-wine version, also called grzane wino. It remains an alcoholic drink after warming and is intended for adults. Choose an inexpensive dry or medium-dry red wine you enjoy.

ORIGINS & EVOLUTION
A name used for more than one drink.
Grzaniec can refer to mulled wine or mulled beer. The wine version is also called grzane wino and belongs to a wider European family of warmed, spiced wines. Red wine, citrus, cinnamon, and cloves are familiar starting points.
CULTURAL CONTEXT
Served when the weather turns cold.
Mulled wine is sold at Polish Christmas markets and served in bars and homes during colder months. Sweetening and spice combinations differ. Honey is one option, and the intensity can be adjusted without needing an expensive bottle of wine.
AT THE TABLE
A gentle infusion in a saucepan.
Our version warms red wine with orange, cinnamon, cloves, and honey, then rests briefly off the heat. The cloves are strained away, and a fresh orange half-slice finishes the mug. Warming does not make the drink alcohol-free.
